Book Club Book: A Court of Thorns and Roses
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas would make a good book club book because it has a little bit for everyone. There’s romance, action and a little bit of mystery thrown in.
Plot: Feyre is a poor girl just trying to feed her family when she crosses path with a High Fae. Through her hatred, she ends up living amongst fae who have been cursed. She has to figure out how to save them and the entire fae world. Feyre faces off with someone who hates humans more than she hated fae, who makes her prove herself before she can save those she loves.
Characters:
Feyre: Human girl who hunts to feed her two sisters, Nesta and Elaine, and their father. She ends up on the fae side of the Wall in the Spring Court when she kills a high fae while hunting. As she learns more and more about fae, she starts to fall in love with Tamlin, who gives her the time and safety to paint. When Rhysand, High Lord of Night Court, appears, Tamlin sends Feyre back to the human side of the Wall to keep her safe. While with her family, Feyre realizes how to break the curse that’s on the Spring Court and goes back to save them. She goes Under the Mountain where she makes a deal to save the Spring Court where hshe is to complete three tasks, all meant to kill her.
Tamlin: High Lord of Spring Court. Cursed by Amarantha with the rest of his court to wear a mask for 50 years until a human who hated fae could love him. He sends Feyre away right before the 50 years is up to protect her. He tells her he loves her, but she doesn’t say it back. When time is up, he is forced Under the Mountain with Amarantha, but doesn’t give her what she wants, which is his love. He is forced to watch as Feyre risks her life multiple times to prove that she loves him.
Rhysand: High Lord of Night Court. Amarantha’s play thing.
Amarantha: She is the former general of Hybern, and self proclaimed High Queen of Pythian. She has control of all of the high lord’s power’s, even if she can’t access them for herself. Placed the curse on the Spring Court. Has an infatuation with Tamlin, while hates Rhysand and makes him have sex with her. Hates humans and is trying to kill Feyre, and eventually does.
Nesta: Feyre’s oldest sister. When Tamlin places a glamour on Feyre’s family, she’s the only one not to be affected. Protective of Elaine.
Elaine: Feyre’s second sister. Loves to plant gardens. Falls for the glamor that Tamlin places on her.
Lucian: Tamlin’s friend and ambassador to the other courts. Youngest son of the High Lord of Autumn and his wife. Lost the woman he loves when his father ordered her to die. “A” took his eye and gave him a scare down his face when Tamlin sent him to reason with her. Has a metal eye to replace it.
Background on the book: A Court of Thorns and Roses takes place 500 years after a war between Fae and Humans. Humans were fighting for the freedom to no longer be the slaves of Fae. Some Fae fought with the humans and were their friends, others, like Amarantha and Tamlin’s father, did not. Amarantha and Tamlin’s father were friends and she is upset he was killed by Rhysand’s father, so she punishes Rhysand for it by making him her whore. Feyre’s family was once wealthy, but lost all their money when their father tried to pay back all the money that was owed at once. When the debt collectors came, they smashed his legs and he refused to look for work again after that. What little money they had after, was used to buy a small cottage. Because her father wouldn’t work and her sisters didn’t know how, and refused to learn, Feyre went to the woods and learned to hunt for their food.
Discussion Questions:
What do you think Amarantha would've done if Feyre would've broke the cure by telling Tamlin she loved him as she left for the human lands?
Should Tamlin have tried to sneak Feyre out from Under the Mountain instead of letting her complete the challenges?
Does helping Feyre make Rhysand a good guy, even though he made her make a bargain for it?
